Program overview
This English-taught master’s builds on core forest-management principles and prepares graduates to manage socio-ecological systems in tropical and subtropical regions. The programme combines social, natural and technical sciences so students can analyse human–ecosystem interactions, devise and implement sustainable land-use strategies, mediate conflicts, and communicate across cultures. It also develops research, leadership and teamwork abilities to tackle contemporary and future challenges in tropical forestry, with alumni commonly moving into senior roles in forestry agencies, governments, NGOs, international organisations, consultancy and research in intercultural settings.
Curriculum structure
During the first two semesters, coursework gives equal weight to social and ecological perspectives. The initial semester emphasizes theory and methods across specialist forest topics: social-system modules include forest policy, forest-resource economics, and organisational and management systems; ecological-system modules cover subjects such as tropical silviculture, forest ecology relevant to silviculture and nature conservation, and urban forestry. The third semester brings these strands together through compulsory modules like research design and project planning and management, and allows students to shape a specialised profile by choosing compulsory electives focused on either forest governance or forest management. Methodological training also includes project planning techniques, conflict management approaches and computer-based modelling, culminating in a comprehensive research plan for primary data collection and analysis. The final semester is devoted to the Master’s thesis, which includes fieldwork carried out in a tropical or subtropical country and ends with preparation, write-up and oral defence of the thesis.
Key programme requirements and components
For detailed module descriptions and up-to-date administration information, please consult the programme’s official web page.
This MSc in Tropical Forestry combines academic teaching with hands-on practice so students learn both the theoretical foundations and how to apply them in real-world tropical forest contexts. Instruction is varied and interactive, delivered through lectures and seminars, practical exercises, e-learning and online seminars, group discussions, excursions, and independent study. The programme is run completely in English to accommodate international graduates.
The degree lasts two years and totals 120 ECTS. Its curriculum is organised into three semesters of on-campus attendance followed by a fourth semester devoted to fieldwork and the preparation, submission and defence of a Master’s thesis. That final fieldwork semester gives you sustained, supervised practical experience and forms the core research component of the degree.

This program requires both a relevant academic background and practical experience. You must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (BSc or equivalent) in forestry or a closely related discipline, and you should have a minimum of two years of professional work experience. These prerequisites help ensure you are prepared for advanced, practice-oriented study in tropical forestry.
As part of your application you will need to submit a short research concept outlining a potential Master’s thesis topic. This helps the admissions team assess the fit of your interests with the program and supervisors.
