This two-year, full-time interdisciplinary MA is an international programme designed to equip graduates for careers in business, public administration, diplomacy, policy-making and academic research. Taught in English within the field of political science, the curriculum covers EU institutions and European integration, the transatlantic relationship and comparative welfare-state models, while addressing contemporary challenges such as security, migration and economic inequality.
The degree is delivered through a network of partner universities and is completed over four semesters. All students begin the first semester at the University of Bath, then continue their studies at a minimum of two and up to three partner sites, allowing study across multiple countries and academic systems. Partner institutions include the University of Bath, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Sciences Po Grenoble and Università degli Studi di Siena.
Studying at different campuses gives a strong international and comparative orientation—students experience varied teaching styles, languages and cultural contexts and gain first-hand perspectives on the European Union and transatlantic relations. Graduates receive a joint Master’s degree from the University of Bath (MA in Contemporary European Studies) issued in the name of all partner universities, positioning them for international careers in public, private or academic sectors.
Key facts / requirements
This multi-university Master’s is run through the European American University Consortium (EAUC), letting you study at a minimum of two and up to three partner universities across Europe. All students begin the programme with the first semester at the University of Bath, after which you move to one or two other consortium institutions. That structure means you don’t just study European politics in the abstract — you live and learn in different countries, experiencing varied academic cultures, teaching styles and languages.
The programme is designed to give a genuinely comparative, transnational view of contemporary Europe by combining courses from multiple institutions. Graduates emerge with an enhanced ability to analyse European political developments from several national perspectives, adapt to diverse academic and cultural environments, and work across international networks. On successfully meeting all course and assessment requirements, students receive a joint MA in Contemporary European Studies awarded by the University of Bath on behalf of the EAUC.
This program requires applicants to already hold an undergraduate degree in a related area. Suitable backgrounds include disciplines within the humanities and social sciences, or closely related fields that provide a foundation for advanced study in contemporary European politics and society.
The awarding institution must be a recognised higher-education provider. For applicants with degrees from outside the program’s country, the admissions authority will evaluate whether the qualification is equivalent and meets the programme’s entry standards.
