Overview The European Mining Course (EMC) is an international exchange programme run jointly by three leading technical universities in Europe: RWTH Aachen University (Germany), Aalto University (Finland) and Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria). It brings together students from these partner institutions as well as many participants from across Europe and the world to study the international dimensions of raw-material extraction as part of their Master's studies.
Curriculum and learning approach The EMC adopts a life-cycle perspective on resources, covering the full mining value chain and the entire commodity lifecycle. The programme delivers up‑to‑date technical foundations in areas such as deposit modelling, mine planning and economic evaluation, while also integrating non-technical disciplines including business management, professional ethics and environmental engineering. A clearly structured programme for health, safety and environmental management is also a core component.
Hands-on experience and career relevance Beyond classroom learning, the EMC offers exposure to industry through guest lectures, field trips and real-world industry projects, helping students gain practical insights and build professional contacts. The programme aims to develop adaptable, innovative engineers and future decision-makers in mineral resources and related engineering fields—professionals capable of identifying optimal solutions for the sustainable and efficient use of deposits.
Admission & participant information (key points)
This two-year, triple-degree Master’s programme is delivered jointly by Aalto University, RWTH Aachen University and Montanuniversität Leoben. Students are officially registered at all three institutions and spend one semester at each partner. The cohort begins in September at Aalto University (Finland), then — after a two-month break during which students may undertake an industry internship — continues at RWTH Aachen (Germany) and moves on to Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria) for the third semester.
In the final semester each student selects one partner university to act as the primary supervisor for their Master’s thesis; the thesis may also be carried out in cooperation with a company. Successful completion of the programme results in three separate MSc degrees (one from each partner university) and an EMC participation certificate issued by FEMP. The structure combines academic study across different national systems with practical, industry-facing experience and a cross‑border research project.

Program completion requirements (concise)
The EMC programme admits a maximum of 30 students each year, so places are limited. Applicants must hold (or be about to complete) a relevant Bachelor's degree from a recognised higher education institution. The coordinating university for the programme is Aalto, and final-year students may apply if they will have completed their degree by the specified deadline.
Below are the specific eligibility criteria and document requirements:
Winter Semester (International)
28 February 2026
Winter Semester (EU/EEA)
28 February 2026
Graduates are prepared for technical and leadership roles across the mining and raw materials sector, including mine planning, resource engineering, project and operations management, economic evaluation, and environmental and safety management. The programme’s combination of technical fundamentals, business/ethics training and HSE focus equips students to take on roles in mining companies, engineering consultancies, resource evaluation firms and environmental management organisations.
The programme’s strong industry contacts, field trips, internships and the option to write a thesis in cooperation with industry enhance employability and professional networks. The international triple-degree format and mobility experience also support careers in multinational corporations, international project management, supply-chain roles for raw materials, regulatory/policy bodies, and provide a solid foundation for doctoral studies if desired.
