This two-year, international Master's programme is taught in English and focuses on the design, implementation and evaluation of digital media systems. It builds on the knowledge students gained during their Bachelor's studies and deepens expertise across technical and creative aspects of digital media.
The programme offers two distinct specialisations. Choosing the arts and design track leads to a Master of Arts degree awarded by the University of the Arts Bremen. Choosing the computer science / media informatics track leads to a Master of Science degree awarded by the University of Bremen. The language of instruction throughout the programme is English, and the course is aimed at an international student body.
The curriculum begins with a broad foundation in the first year, combining media informatics, media design, media theory and focused topics in digital media. These modules equip students with the technical, creative and conceptual grounding needed to undertake advanced, practice-led work. During the third semester, students concentrate on a full-time Master's project that applies the knowledge from the first year to a substantial, open-ended challenge. This project explicitly addresses complex problems at the intersection of science, arts and design. The fourth semester is reserved for writing and submitting the Master's thesis, which consolidates the student’s research and practical outcomes.
Across the programme you will develop the ability to integrate computational methods, design practice and critical reflection to produce original work. Expect to deepen specialist technical skills from media informatics, refine visual and interaction approaches from media design, and sharpen theoretical frameworks from media theory. The full-time project provides sustained, hands-on experience in solving interdisciplinary problems, while the Master's thesis demonstrates independent research capability and mastery of a chosen topic.

Admission requirements
This master’s application requires a small set of documents and clear evidence that you have both strong technical skills and media/design experience. Prepare materials that demonstrate your ability to work with programming and algorithms (not just using ready-made tools) as well as your practice in media-related design.
Your application should include academic records that show relevant coursework and a portfolio that makes your creative and technical accomplishments visible. Use the motivation letter and CV to explain your background, how your experience connects to the program, and your professional or research goals.
Required documents and key expectations
Mandatory demonstration of combined expertise
Tips for international applicants: present translated and certified copies of certificates if needed, and organize your portfolio and transcripts so reviewers can quickly see which items evidence programming/algorithmic depth and which show media/design ability.

Graduates are prepared for roles at the intersection of technology and design, such as interaction/UX designer, digital media developer, multimedia systems engineer, and creative technologist in digital agencies, media companies, cultural institutions, and tech firms. The programme’s mix of media informatics and design equips students to bridge technical implementation and creative concept development, making them attractive to interdisciplinary teams and startups.
The MSc/MA also provides a foundation for applied research positions or further academic study (e.g., PhD) in areas like human-computer interaction, media technology, and digital art/technology research, especially for those pursuing the research-oriented MSc track or who develop strong research portfolios during their master’s project and thesis.
