Overview
This Master of Science is a specialised, research-oriented graduate programme that emphasizes rigorous scientific methods and adherence to internationally recognised standards. It focuses on developing analytical and methodological expertise related to exercise, sport and human performance, while deliberately not teaching sport-specific practical skills. The curriculum also intentionally builds field-relevant soft skills such as professional communication and leadership.
What you'll learn and where it leads
The programme prepares graduates for roles in research-based environments by training them to independently generate knowledge and make informed decisions in areas such as diagnostics, planning and evaluation. Students acquire profession-specific competencies in leadership and communication that qualify them for responsible and decisive staff positions in research, clinical or applied settings that rely on evidence-based practice.
Key facts and structure
Entry requirements (concise)
This two-year (four-semester) MSc is built around a strong core during the first half of the degree and increasing individual focus in the second half. In semesters one and two you follow compulsory modules that combine theory and hands-on practice across sport psychology, human movement science, and training & performance sciences, together with statistics, research methods and market-oriented skills. The balance of classroom learning and applied courses ensures you develop both conceptual understanding and practical competence.
From semester three onward you select a specialisation and investigate it in greater depth. The curriculum strongly integrates individual research projects and the option to undertake international internships across different fields, allowing you to apply methods and insights in real-world or research settings. Cohorts are intentionally small (maximum 20 students), which supports close supervision, collaborative learning and personalised mentoring.
Learning outcomes include the ability to interpret and apply principles from sport psychology, biomechanics and training science; design and analyse studies using appropriate statistical and methodological approaches; carry out independent research projects; and translate scientific knowledge into practice or market-relevant solutions. The programme’s practical focus and international internship opportunities also prepare graduates for varied roles in sport, health, research or for progression to doctoral study.
Key curriculum requirements and features
This programme admits a maximum of 20 students and begins only in the winter semester. Admissions are governed by a formal admission regulation that determines the approval process, so places are limited and the selection can be competitive. Applicants with degrees from outside Germany should ensure their qualifications are equivalent to the stated degree level and be prepared to document course content and credit allocation.
You must hold a subject-related undergraduate degree comparable to a Bachelor of Science with a typical duration of six semesters. In addition, you should be able to demonstrate prior coursework in statistics, biology and psychology as specified below—make sure these credit points are clearly shown on your transcript or with accompanying course descriptions.

Graduates are prepared for roles in research-based environments such as university and institutional research groups, applied research units in sport and health organisations, and development positions in performance diagnostics and evaluation. The programme’s methodological training and emphasis on independent project work enable alumni to design and run scientific studies, lead evaluation projects and contribute to evidence-based policy or practice.
The combination of technical research skills and profession-specific soft skills (leadership and communication) also positions graduates for managerial and decisive staff roles in organisations focused on human performance, rehabilitation, sports science consulting and related sectors.
