This English-taught Master's builds specialist and managerial expertise across the international horticulture value chain with a strong emphasis on sustainability and resilience. In the winter term you will cover methodological and quality-management foundations such as Research Methods and Quality Management; in the summer term the focus shifts to applied subjects including Irrigation Technologies, Crop Production and Management. Throughout the course you will also strengthen your management capabilities and personalise your profile via elective modules, including opportunities to improve language skills.
After two semesters of taught modules you undertake a practical semester in International Horticulture. This placement is designed for applying and expanding your skills in real-world settings, building professional networks in Germany, Europe and beyond, and gaining insight into roles as a manager in an international company or as a practitioner in applied horticultural research. An accompanying course supports your link to the university and fellow students while you are on placement.
In your final semester you write a Master’s thesis that tackles a research question of practical relevance to global horticulture, developing solution-oriented outcomes. A joint Master’s seminar accompanies this phase, fostering interdisciplinary discussion and professional networking that will help prepare you for your future career.
This MSc follows a semester-based layout that mixes core theory, applied technology and hands-on practice. The winter semester grounds you in research fundamentals and cross-cultural collaboration with modules such as Research Methods and Intercultural Competence, alongside applied courses focused on Post-Harvest Quality Management and Quality Chain Management. Elective modules allow you to tailor your learning toward particular interests.
The summer semester emphasizes technical solutions and sustainable business thinking: Advanced Irrigation Technologies, Resilient Specialty Crop Production and Sustainable Business Management form the core, complemented by further electives for specialization. The third semester is devoted to an internship accompanied by a supervised course, giving substantial practical experience in industry, research institutions or extension services. The final semester centers on the master’s seminar and an independent Master’s thesis, concluded with a colloquium.
Graduates will be able to design and manage resilient horticultural systems, apply advanced irrigation and crop production techniques, and implement post-harvest and quality-chain strategies to reduce losses and increase value. The programme also builds skills in applied research, data-driven decision making, and sustainable business practices, while intercultural competence prepares you for international teamwork and stakeholder engagement. The required internship and thesis demonstrate your ability to translate theory into practice and prepare you for roles in industry, consultancy, research or policy.

Graduates are prepared for managerial and specialist roles across international horticulture value chains — for example as managers in international horticultural companies or as staff in applied research institutions working on production resilience, irrigation systems, post‑harvest quality and sustainable business management. The programme’s combination of technical, managerial and research skills also supports careers in consultancy, supply‑chain management, quality assurance and organisations focused on sustainable agriculture.
The practical semester and final thesis help build industry contacts and real‑world experience, increasing employability in both private‑sector enterprises and applied research or development organisations at national and international levels.
