Overview
This full-time Master’s program runs over four semesters. During the first two semesters you study on campus in Mainz, where you are introduced to the core subjects of international business. The third semester is spent at a partner university abroad and is used to pursue a chosen specialisation. In the final semester you complete your Master’s thesis either in Mainz or at the partner university if you choose one of the double‑degree options. The curriculum also includes an eight‑week applied project (internship or work experience) that can be completed in any country.
Teaching style and international environment
Courses combine lectures and seminars with a strong focus on individual assignments and self‑study. Group work is integral: students collaborate in both small and large teams on project work (often linked to real company briefs) and present their results to peers and instructors. The program is genuinely international — roughly 60% of students come from outside Germany, all modules are taught and assessed in English, and faculty exchanges from partner institutions further enrich the cross‑cultural learning experience. These elements prepare you to work effectively in international teams and build a lasting global network.
Career relevance
The degree equips you with the practical skills and international perspective needed for roles in global business and prepares you for middle management positions. Graduates are valued for their ability to lead and cooperate in culturally diverse teams and for their readiness to be professionally mobile.
Key program components / requirements
Overview
The MA in International Business begins with two semesters at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. The first (winter) semester builds foundational knowledge in global economics, accounting, law, marketing, leadership and quantitative methods. The second (summer) semester moves toward applied and integrative topics—digital transformation, strategic management, multinational corporate finance, export operations and academic research—and includes an applied project or internship where you put analytical tools into practice (during the program or over the summer break).
The third semester is a mandatory study-abroad specialization at a partner university. You must complete at least 25 ECTS credits abroad (typically across five course options) to deepen expertise in a management field or a particular industry. Many partner institutions also allow you to stay for the fourth semester to write your Master’s thesis and, in some cases, award a partner Master’s degree (double degree); meeting double-degree rules can require earning more than the standard 120 ECTS.
In the final semester (either back at Mainz or at the partner university if you pursue a double degree) you complete a Master’s thesis: an independent research project addressing an international business topic. The thesis may be combined with an internship at a multinational company. A formal defence is not required at Mainz unless the partner university’s double-degree regulations demand one.

Program requirements (concise)
This master’s programme looks for applicants with a solid, above-average undergraduate background in business and strong multilingual skills, plus clear motivation for international study. You will need to document your academic qualifications and language abilities, explain why you want to join the programme (including your choice of partner university for the study-abroad semester), and indicate your regional preferences for the third-semester exchange.
All documents and language proofs should meet the programme’s detailed specifications (see the programme’s admissions page for exact documentation and test-score requirements). If you studied outside the EU, your grades will be converted into the German grading scale by uni-assist.
Note: Consult the programme’s admissions information for precise language-level criteria and acceptable forms of documentation.
