Program overview The English-taught Master of Arts in Media and Communication Science provides an international, forward-looking education in media and communication with a clear emphasis on digital media. The programme combines theoretical foundations and empirical methods with applied approaches to prepare students for both analytical and practice-oriented roles in the digital media landscape.
What you study Coursework spans contemporary and technology-driven areas of communication, including strategic communication, public relations, communication management, digital and social media, virtual reality, risk and crisis communication, and computational communication science. The curriculum is designed to strengthen students’ abilities to design and evaluate communication strategies, conduct empirical research, and apply practical techniques across media contexts.
Skills and career prospects Graduates leave with enhanced analytical, strategic and applied communication skills as well as knowledge of research methods and theoretical frameworks in media and communication. Many alumni go on to work in Germany and internationally in roles such as marketing, public relations, data science, market research, event management, journalism, or academia, and are employed by companies, NGOs, government bodies, and higher education institutions.
Requirements
This programme is taught across four semesters and is built to balance theoretical foundations, empirical research training and vocationally oriented specialization. In the first three semesters you complete taught modules grouped into three categories: Theories, Methods and Technologies in Communication and Media; Empirical Research in Communication and Media (electives); and Specialisation and Vocational Training. The final, fourth semester is dedicated to an independent Master’s thesis accompanied by a thesis colloquium.
Key modules include topics such as intercultural communication, media management and data analysis, alongside two semester-long empirical-research electives and a concentrated semester of specialisation. The vocational component contains five seminars focused on specialist areas in communication and media plus two applied-communication seminars, giving room to practice professional skills. The programme’s flexible structure lets you combine different fields according to academic interests and career objectives, and there is the option to spend an exchange semester at an international partner university (Erasmus+ funding may be available).
