This English-taught MSc programme prepares a new generation of urban practitioners to respond to the complex environmental, cultural, socio-economic and governance challenges arising from rapid urban change around the world. The curriculum emphasises a transnational perspective, bringing together students from different regional backgrounds to analyse and intervene in concrete urban situations.
Students work in interdisciplinary teams on site-specific projects in close collaboration with local communities, stakeholders, organisations and institutions—both locally and internationally. The programme combines reflective theory with practical methods so graduates can design and implement integrated, transdisciplinary solutions for landscapes, cities and buildings.
The programme is delivered as a double-degree and is hosted and organised jointly by the two partner universities: University of Stuttgart and Ain Shams University, Cairo. For full application details and up-to-date information, please consult the IUSD programme website.

Curriculum overview
This programme is built to deepen your individual expertise in integrated urbanism and sustainable design while training you to tackle complex, practice-oriented projects in interdisciplinary teams. Early semesters emphasise conceptual and theoretical foundations—compulsory core modules introduce environmental, technical and socio-cultural dimensions of eco-urbanism—while later teaching shifts toward hands-on application. You will be encouraged to become a “generalist with a speciality”: after meeting core requirements, you select elective specialisation modules to form a coherent track that reflects your background and career goals.
Key modules and studio work
The curriculum balances knowledge-based modules with application-driven studios. Core modules provide broad, cross-cutting understanding of eco-urbanism; elective specialisation modules let you focus on particular facets of sustainable urban design. Integrated research-and-design studios are central: in the first two semesters you work in small groups on progressively complex design projects, refining technical and collaborative skills. In the third semester the whole cohort collaborates on a large, practice-based case study situated in the MENA region, synthesising different specialisations and linking you with partner institutions involved in project development and decision-making.
Learning outcomes and career prospects
Graduates leave with practical and conceptual skills to develop holistic, interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to sustainable urbanism. You will gain analytic and design competencies, experience working across disciplines, and increased intellectual independence and self-reliance. Career pathways include roles in international organisations, national and local governments and urban agencies, non-profit and non-governmental organisations, planning and design firms, as well as preparation for academic research and PhD study or participation in international research projects.
Requirements (summary)
This Master's programme welcomes applicants from around the world who hold an internationally recognised Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in core design and planning disciplines. It is designed to attract candidates with strong academic backgrounds in architecture, urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, and related engineering fields.
Applicants with undergraduate degrees in other disciplines — such as geography, sociology, environmental management, political science, economics, cultural studies, or Arabic/African/Islamic studies — may also be considered if they bring relevant professional experience. The programme particularly encourages early-career professionals working in public institutions, the private sector, civil society initiatives, or NGOs who are motivated by knowledge transfer and pursuing social impact through urban and sustainable design.
Please note: the double-degree option is available only to EPOS scholarship holders; restrictions apply, so consult the programme website for full details.
